Last Minute Preparations

As the storm nears make sure you make the final preparations to ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones.

As the storm nears make sure you make the final preparations to ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones.

Final Inside Preparations:

• Check your first aid kit for missing items.
• Check your safe room to make sure all items are in place.
• Put important documents, plus a list of posessions, in a waterproof container in your safe room.
• Move as many valuables off the floor to limit flood damage.
• Prepare food and water.
• Turn your refrigerator to its coldest setting. Do not open unless necessary.
• Clean your tub and fill it with water. If the water supply goes out, you will be able to use this to flush toilets and take sponge baths.
• Unplug appliances that are no longer needed as the storm nears.
• Continue to listen to the radio and television for important instructions.

Final Outside Preparations:

• Close and secure shutters. If you do not have shutters, mount plywood across windows and sliding glass doors.
• Bring in or tie down loose items in the yard.
• Do not drain your pool, but add extra chlorine to reduce the risk of contamination.
• Do not throw lawn furniture in the pool.
• Take down satellite dishes and TV antennas, but be sure to unplug the set first.
• Move vehicles out of flood-prone areas and into garages if possible. If not, park cars away from trees and close to homes or buildings.
• Bring pets indoors and make sure they have proper identification
• Stay off the roads! It's too late to get supplies, and you will be competing with people trying to flee unsafe homes.
• Conditions will deteriorate rapidly, sometimes hours before landfall, so get inside quickly.
